The dream of home ownership is slipping out of reach for many young Canadians. Others, who do own are over-leveraged or stretching themselves too thin – with predictable consequences. Meanwhile, older segments of the population favour higher prices and the security equity provides them. As always, the political Left arrives with its usual smorgasbord of big government solutions, regulations and command edicts. Yet, with few alternatives offered, prescriptions like social housing and new taxes dominate the public discourse. As more voters cite housing as a top concern, the question is: how can Canada’s centre-right connect on issues related to housing? This panel will explore the role of the market and government in providing fresh solutions to one of Canada’s biggest public policy challenges, and why conservatives should be leaders in advancing the dream of home ownership.
