John F. Prato

John Prato rejoined TD Securities in September 2016 after serving as Canada’s Head of Mission and Consul General to the United States of America based in New York City.

In his posting as Consul General of Canada, John focused on representing Canada’s interests in the financial/investment/trade and energy sector as well as continental security.   This included increasing investment opportunities between Canada and the United States, encouraging bi-national free trade, developing energy opportunities in both the upstream and downstream, and negotiating agreements between various Governments at the national and sub-sovereign level.   John developed a trusted relationship with elected officials in Washington and the respective State Capitals as well as leading US executive and labour leaders.

In 1991, John began his career at TD initially in Mortgage-Backed Securities and later in the Commercial Bank. He joined TD Securities in 1996, first in TD Capital Group, the merchant banking arm of TD Securities, and later in Equity Capital Markets. He has been involved in a diverse range of transactions, including IPO’s, equity underwritings, convertible debentures, mergers and acquisitions and leveraged buyouts.

John is a trusted advisor to Canadian and U.S. executives, as well as leading political leaders from both Canada and the U.S.  He is a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for his service as Consul General of Canada in New York City.

John graduated from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario with a Master’s of Business Administration and a Master’s of Public Administration and has a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation.

John currently sits on the Board of Chobani LLC, manufacturer of America’s #1 Greek yogurt, La Colombe Torrefaction Inc., a premium U.S. based coffee company, and the Foreign Policy Association.  John sat on the Board of Restaurants Brand International (TSX & NYSE listed) and the parent company of Tim Hortons, Burger King, Popeyes and Firehouse Subs.
